Painting & Remodeling in Raleigh, NC

Raleigh has a wider range of houses than anywhere else in Wake County. A home in Oakwood might be well over a century old, and a townhome near Brier Creek might have been finished a few years ago. Each one needs a different approach, so we plan every job around the house in front of us.

Older homes inside the Beltline

Neighborhoods like Oakwood, Mordecai, Boylan Heights, Five Points and Hayes Barton have plaster walls, original wood trim, tall windows and wood siding carrying decades of paint. Those homes reward patience. Paint has to be scraped and feathered by hand, rotted sills and porch parts are rebuilt through our carpentry work, and plaster cracks get repaired properly instead of being covered with caulk.

Homes built before 1978 may have lead-based paint under the newer coats, so we talk about that before any sanding or scraping starts. If your house is in one of Raleigh's local historic districts, exterior changes such as replacing siding or trim can require a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Raleigh Historic Development Commission. It's worth checking before the work is scheduled.

Ranches, split-levels and North Raleigh subdivisions

Outside the Beltline, much of Raleigh is brick ranches and split-levels from the 1960s through the 1980s, plus big subdivisions in North Raleigh off Six Forks Road and Falls of Neuse Road. Inside, these houses often need updated colors, painted-over paneling, smoothed ceilings and drywall repair where settling has cracked the corners above doors. Outside, the work is usually trim, fascia and soffits on a brick house rather than full siding.

Newer communities like Wakefield and the neighborhoods around Brier Creek usually have HOA design guidelines. We'll paint from your approved colors and give you product details for the review board.

What Raleigh weather does to paint

Raleigh is the City of Oaks, and all that tree cover keeps shaded walls damp through humid summers. That's where green mildew shows up first, usually on the north side of the house. Every spring a coat of yellow pollen settles on siding, decks and screens, and summer storms splash red clay onto the bottom rows of siding. South- and west-facing walls take the hardest sun and fade first.

That's why every exterior painting job starts with power washing and enough drying time, followed by scraping, priming bare wood and fresh caulk. Paint can't do its job on a dirty or damp surface.

Inside the house

Plenty of Raleigh work happens indoors: interior painting before a sale or after a move, a bathroom remodel, or a dated tile floor or shower covered in seamless micro cement. We take fewer jobs so each one gets the time it needs, and the owner is there for every one.

Raleigh painting & remodeling FAQ

Do you paint homes in Raleigh's historic districts?

Yes. Older homes in neighborhoods like Oakwood and Boylan Heights need extra prep, and we handle wood repair as part of the job. If you're in a local historic district, check with the Raleigh Historic Development Commission about whether your exterior work needs a Certificate of Appropriateness.

My Raleigh house was built before 1978. Is the old paint a concern?

It can be, because older paint layers may contain lead. We'll talk about it before any scraping or sanding begins so the work is planned and done safely.

Why does mildew keep coming back on one side of my house?

Usually it's the shaded, north-facing side, where Raleigh's humidity and tree cover keep the siding damp. A proper wash with a mildew-killing cleaner before painting, plus trimming back branches where you can, makes a big difference.

Do you work all over Raleigh?

Yes. We cover all of Raleigh, from downtown and inside the Beltline out to North Raleigh, Brier Creek, Wakefield and southeast Raleigh.
